MEDICAL DERMATOLOGY I SKIN PIGMENTATION
Pigmentation of the skin can have various causes. Pigmentation can develop due to injury, inflammation, sun exposure and genetics. Babies can also be born with uneven skin pigmentations, which are commonly called birthmarks. Since there can be many causes for pigmentation, it is important to have a proper evaluation to determine the diagnosis and the best treatment course for you.
COMMON CAUSES OF SKIN PIGMENTATION:
Solar Lentigines or Sun freckles:
These are caused by chronic or acute sun exposure.
Melasma:
Presents as symmetric hyperpigmented patches and usually occurs in women with darker skin types.
Post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation:
More common in darker-skinned individuals. It's caused by inflammatory skin conditions (e.g. acne), injury and medical interventions (such as laser therapy)
SKIN PIGMENTATION TREATMENT:
A full comprehensive approach is required to treat skin pigmentation. Depending on the cause, clinical treatment for pigmentation may include oral medication, topical creams or in-office treatments. As an experienced dermatologist, Dr Jacobs will give a proper clinical examination to determine the cause of pigmentation and which modalities of treatment would be appropriate for you.
In-office treatments include chemical peels customised for your skin type and concern to brighten your skin with different chemical peeling agents such as glycolic acid, salicylic acid or TCA (trichloroacetic acid (TCA).
